Here's the latest satellite image to be posted by NASA's Earth Observatory. It shows the Mt Disappointment Wallaby Creek catchment

The areas in red are forests and bush not affected by the fire. T

he darker the area, the greater was the intensity of the fire.

The Wallaby Creek area (centre) has a substantial amount of red in it, indicating that the fire was of a lesser intensity than the surrounding areas.

This is where the Old and Mature Mountain Ash forests are concentrated (from my observations hiking the area in years gone by).

The burnt areas within the southern and northern sections of the catchment are mostly drier forest types.

The Wallaby Creek catchment is within the Kinglake National Park (outlined in yellow). Logging coupes are highlighted in red, and plantations are highlighted in orange.

To the north of the burnt area, there are reasonably young, even aged messmate and dry forest euc species. I have assumed that these areas were heavily logged within the last century as there are very few mature trees in that area.

Older trees can be found on the steep escarpments surrounding the plateau. A great deal of burnt grass is in this image, particularly in the west, where it is being alleged that this is the ignition point.
