EDO Seminar Series - The Precautionary Principle 13th July

EDO Seminar Series 2010

THE PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE
– What is it?
– How do courts use it to protect the environment?

The precautionary principle has been around for over 20 years and is a key principle in Australian environment and planning legislation. But how useful is it for decision-makers and does its application assist in environment protection?

The Hon. Justice Kevin Bell of the Supreme Court of Victoria will join us for this month's EDO seminar on the application of the precautionary principle by decision-makers in Victoria. Justice Bell will discuss its application in VCAT, Nick Wimbush will discuss its consideration by Planning Panels Victoria and Professor Lee Godden will discuss the evolution of the principle around the world.
