The question: How are area's of Leadbeaters Possum Habitat being treated by the states logging company; VicForests? And how does the state government manage and respond to a recorded breach under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act or the Code of Forests Practices? Your donation will help us conduct this important testing of legislation
Background: In 2010 MyEnvironment Inc. decided to investigate a coupe that looked to have contained Leadbeaters Possums (LBP). We checked the biodiversity maps and found that logging had clearfelled this listed habitat. Prior to logging, it is likely the coupe contained nest tree's for the possum and as a 'stag watch' in the narrow buffer between the two coupe revealed, a tiny colony still clings on.
Ecotopia Consulting are managing the scientific study whilst our volunteers measure tree's and help with data collection. The findings of each study are presented to Government for active management adjustments.
Every donation enables us to:
- Purchase GPS devices
- Purchase programs for modelling forest
- Create education materials
- Develop innovative programs for forest use
Outcome: Species protection. Appropriate government protocol is developed to award penalties and prevent habitat from being destroyed in the future.
