Greens call for an end to clearfell logging in the central highlands
Victorian Greens Senator, Richard Di Natale, is calling for an immediate end to clearfell logging in the central highlands.
"The all-but-entire destruction of old-growth forest in the central highlands region is devastating," said Senator Di Natale.
A report today in the US journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows that old-growth Eucalyptus used to make up 80 per cent of the forest in Victoria's central highlands but has been reduced to just 1.2 per cent.
"Continued ravaging of the region could wipe out all old-growth trees in the region and have disastrous impacts on carbon emissions, water supply and bio-diversity."
"We must take immediate measures to preserve and regenerate the area, including an immediate ban on clearfell logging."
