VicForests Alleged Breach #0229 logging of Leadbeaters habitat Zone1B in 2008
Conclusions
The study area is adjacent to a Special Protection Zone for the Leadbeater’s Possum and other species
and contained a mixture of regrowth, mature and late mature Mountain Ash trees.
The study area is in the know range of the endangered fauna species and shows features of its preferred
habitat described
as Zone 1a and Zone 1b.
The surrounding forest and the remains of Acacia sp. in the studied area indicates a dense understorey
vegetation of Acacia sp. as foraging habitat for the Leadbeater’s Possum.
The study is unable to identify habitat trees that were potentially felled. However within the study area
there are 13 trees with a DBH of more than 1.5 metres. Several of these trees could quite possibly have
been hollow bearing trees.
The study identified 33 old stags that were standing or have been collapsed and disintegrated during the
post logging fire. These stags can be identified as Zone 1b habitat feature.
When viewing the habitat trees surrounding the study area and the habitat features in the study area as
on habitat zone, the area provides more than 12 habitat trees per 3 hectares and can be indicated as
zone 1a and should have been included in the adjoining Special Management Zone.
When considering the study area as an individual habitat zone, the area provides more than 12 habitat
trees per 3 hectares and can be indicated as Zone 1b and should have been included in a General
Management Zone and have been excluded from logging.
Due to the logging of this area Habitat trees and understorey foraging habitat has adversely been
affected.
